But in many ways, that decade holds some of the greatest memories for me personally. I graduated from high school (check); tried college (flunked out&#8211;<em>uncheck<\/em>); and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/from-civilian-to-us-navy\/\" target=\"_blank\">joined the <strong>Navy<\/strong><\/a> (check).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While I<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/17-from-sailor-to-civilian\/\" target=\"_blank\"> left the Navy in 1977<\/a> after four great years<em>, the Navy never left me<\/em>. I\u2019m sure a lot of my non-Navy veteran friends feel the same. Our military service will <em>always <\/em>be a part of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Once Navy, always Navy<\/em><\/strong>\u2014unless, of course, you were one of those \u201cduo-lingo\u201d types, like a few of my veteran friends. He was one of those guys who\u2019d fill his coffee cup with steaming strong black coffee and gulp the whole thing down without taking a breath. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bos&#8217;n Robuck was pretty much a no-BS officer and followed the rule book. But when one of us screwed up, which, believe it or not, we did now and then, he\u2019d first chew us out, then go to bat for us if need be. Today&#8217;s corporate world calls this &#8220;a teachable moment.&#8221; He was a former Marine and joined the Navy after two \u2018Nam tours. He was also a former Marine and as big and as strong as an ox. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reed was one of those guys who\u2019d wake up in the morning, come out onto the flight deck, crawl his way up about 10 feet on the \u201cTilly\u201d Crash crane, and commence doing about 50 pullups\u2026 all <em>before<\/em> coffee. He\u2019d share stories of some scary \u2018Nam patrols he\u2019d been on. I personally thought he was full of it. But over the years, I\u2019d heard similar stories from some of my other \u2018Nam veteran friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Bos\u2019n Robuck, the Air Bos\u2019n (Crash Officer), and Jim Reed, an E-3 Airman, walked with a slight port list when they wore their ribbons. For civilians, military personnel wear their ribbons above their left breast pocket and if you have enough of them, they could weigh you down, hence leaning to the left or\u2026 a port list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Baby Boomers<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m a \u201cBaby Boomer.\u201d For those youngsters who don\u2019t know what a Baby Boomer is, we are the ones who created the various \u201cgenerational brands,\u201d so to speak. That is, unless you want to talk about \u201cThe Greatest Generation.\u201d That would be my parents. But now that I think about it, Baby Boomers created that term, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/29-may-8-1945-75-years-ago-today\/\" target=\"_blank\">My dad fought in <strong>World War II<\/strong><\/a>, came home, married my mom (they met on a blind date), and had two kids. My sister, Anne, is 1\u00bd years older than me. She got the beauty and the brains, and I got\u2026 well, I\u2019m still trying to figure out what I got. But because the men came home from World War II and started families\u2014a \u201cboom\u201d of youngun\u2019s\u2014hence, the term \u201cBaby Boomers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just because I <em>know <\/em>you&#8217;re curious (and yes, I had to look this up; Dr. Google is full of good info):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Baby boomers<\/strong>: born between 1946 and 1964. There\u2019s about 71.6 million of us in the U.S.<\/li><li><strong>Gen X<\/strong>: born between 1965 and 1980. There\u2019s about 65.2 million of ya\u2019ll in the U.S.<\/li><li><strong>Gen Y<\/strong> (aka, \u201cMillennials\u201d): born between 1981 and 1996. There\u2019s about 72.1 million of you in the U.S., my two kids included.<\/li><li><strong>Gen Z<\/strong>: born between 1997 and 2015. There\u2019s nearly 68 million of you in the U.S.<\/li><li>I have no idea what the next generation will be dubbed. Perhaps they may follow the naming convention of this year\u2019s (2020) hurricanes. What happens when you run out of names? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azadkinsiii.com\/glossary_navy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BTSOOM<\/a>!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>70s TV Shows<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For lots of reasons\u2014perhaps the <strong>Vietnam War<\/strong>, perhaps the changes in social climates, perhaps we were simply coming of age\u2014a new generation of television shows focused on the issues of the day such as politics, race, &amp; equality. These were different from the \u201cwholesome programming\u201d we had in the 60s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We grew up with black &amp; white television shows. Though I remember my dad buying one of the first color TV sets in Gainesville. His excuse? The Florida Gators were playing the Auburn Tigers and he wanted to watch it in color. WTF? I\u2019m sure there were <em>other <\/em>reasons, but that always cracked me up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m sure we all had our favorites, but here\u2019s <em>my<\/em> top 5 list of TV shows in the 70s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/MASH-683x1024.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/MASH.jpg?resize=162%2C243&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2864\" width=\"162\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/MASH.jpg?resize=683%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 683w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/MASH.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/MASH.jpg?resize=768%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/MASH.jpg?resize=1024%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/MASH.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 162px) 100vw, 162px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>M*A*S*H<\/strong> \u2013 by far, my favorite 70s TV show. I don\u2019t know if it was because of the content (Korean <em>and<\/em> Vietnam War themes) or the characters and their humor during the time of war. I&#8217;ve probably watched every episode at one time or another.<\/li><li><strong>Bonanza<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Gunsmoke<\/strong> \u2013 two of my favorite westerns. I actually had the opportunity to visit the Ponderosa (Bonanza) during a business trip to Reno, NV (yes, it <em>was <\/em>for business). Having seen many of the episodes, it was awesome walking in the steps of Ben, Hoss, Little Joe, Adam, &amp; Hop Sing.<\/li><li><strong>Charlie\u2019s Angels<\/strong> \u2013 Three beautiful women working for a private investigator. Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and\u2026 Farah Fawcett-Majors. Need I say more? Who was <em>your<\/em> favorite Angel?<\/li><li><strong>Happy Days<\/strong> \u2013 who didn\u2019t love Happy Days, showcasing life in the mid-50s and 60s America? I had forgotten, but this TV series came out <em>after <\/em>the movie, <strong>American Graffiti<\/strong> (see below).&nbsp; And that tune\u2026 \u201c<em>Sunday, Monday, Happy Days. Tuesday, Wednesday, Happy Days. Thursday, Friday, Happy Days. Saturday&#8230; what a day\u2026 rockin\u2019 all week with you<\/em>.\u201d You&#8217;ll thank me later for planting that tune in your mind. <\/li><li><strong>Hawaii Five-O<\/strong> \u2013 set in Hawaii, a police drama with Jack Lord and James MacArthur, the man who will always\/only be remembered with the phrase, \u201c<em>Book \u2018em Danno<\/em>.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>70s Movies<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar to TV shows of the 70s, the styles and storylines\u2014as well as the evolution of new technologies\u2014changed the way Hollywood made movies. Music and specialized sound effects also played a big part of the 70s movies, too, helping to tell the story. &nbsp;Here are my favorites:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/StarWars-2.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/StarWars-2.jpg?resize=202%2C248&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2867\" width=\"202\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/StarWars-2.jpg?w=591&amp;ssl=1 591w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/StarWars-2.jpg?resize=244%2C300&amp;ssl=1 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Star Wars<\/strong> (1977) \u2013 still one of my all-time favorite movies, Star Wars came to a theater in San Diego during the summer of 1977, a month before I was discharged. Several of us drove to the local cinema only to find a line of movie goers stretched around the block\u2014almost as long as the chow line aboard <em>Kitty Hawk<\/em> on a Westpac cruise. I had to wait until I got back to Florida before seeing it\u2026 and I was NOT disappointed.<\/li><li><strong>Jaws<\/strong> (1975) \u2013 During <strong><em>Westpac \u201975<\/em><\/strong>, Jaws came out while we were in PI (Philippines). Several of us went to see it at the base theater. <em>None of us went swimming after that<\/em>.<\/li><li><strong>Alien<\/strong> (1979) \u2013 I thought this was one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made. Ridley Scott directed this thriller and took us through a mirage of scenes that would scare the bejesus out of ya. I read a while back where the \u201cbirth\u201d of the creature on the dining table had <em>not <\/em>been rehearsed and none of the actors knew what to expect. Everything you see on the camera was spontaneous reaction. Brilliant!<\/li><li><strong>National Lampoon&#8217;s Animal House<\/strong> (1978) \u2013 I don\u2019t know why, but Animal House stands out for me. Perhaps it\u2019s because it reminds me of when I first went to college at <strong>Florida State University<\/strong> in 1972, when I was only 17 years old. I barely lasted a year (can we spell, PARTY!), and after FSU asked me to leave (\u201cDismissed for academic reasons\u201d) with a GPA of 0.7, I joined the Navy.<\/li><li><strong>American Graffiti<\/strong> (1973) \u2013 Another great movie depicting the 50s &amp; 60s with a slew of awesome cars, which in my opinion, were the <em>true stars<\/em> of the movie. Oh yeah\u2026 great music, too. I still listen to the 60s on SiriusXM; it\u2019s #2 after <em>Willie Nelson\u2019s Roadhouse<\/em> station.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>70s Music<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personally, I\u2019ve always liked country music, at least since the day I began working at my Uncle Walter\u2019s Amoco service station in Gainesville. Before that, I listened to oldies and pop (that\u2019s 60s pop, mind you). But the mechanic, <strong>Chuck Buchanan,<\/strong> probably <em>the<\/em> best auto mechanic I\u2019ve ever known, listened to country music on the big Panasonic radio at the station. Every time I\u2019d change the channel on the radio to pop music, he\u2019d quickly change it back, \u201cthis is <em>my<\/em> radio and we\u2019ll listen to what <em>I<\/em> want.\u201d Good ol\u2019, Chuck, but always with a sly smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It grew on me and ever since then, country music\u2014&#8221;Classic&#8221; country, that is\u2014has been in my veins. <strong><em>Willie Nelson\u2019s Roadhouse<\/em><\/strong> on my Chevy truck\u2019s SiriusXM is still my #1 goto station. That is, until my wife rides with me, then I change it to something we <em>both<\/em> can listen to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also play guitar and sing country music. While stationed at <strong><em>NAS Agana, Guam<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>John Melcher<\/strong>, a fellow Crash &amp; Rescue crewman, gave me my Navy nickname\u2014\u201cChet Adkins.\u201d It stuck. And in case you haven\u2019t read my previous post, \u201cGood Morning to ya, Kitty Hawk\u2026\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/39-good-morning-to-ya-kitty-hawk\/\" target=\"_blank\">I was a DJ on <em>USS Kitty Hawk<\/em> in the mid-70s<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So my favorite 70s music will be in the country category. I probably listened to this song more than any other during my time in the Navy. Back in the mid-70s aboard <em>Kitty Hawk<\/em>, we wore headphones when we listened to music in our berthing compartment. Note that \u201cbuds\u201d were either your best friend or a brand of beer snuck aboard. Back then, we had <em>real<\/em> head phones.<\/li><li><strong>Good Hearted Woman<\/strong> (1971) by Willie Nelson &amp; Waylon Jennings; written by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. What a great song &amp; a great voice. Back in the 90s, I actually had this as a ringtone on my first cell phone\u2014it was my boss\u2019 number.<\/li><li><strong>The Gambler<\/strong> (1978) \u2013 by Kenny Rogers; written by Don Schlitz. \u201c<em>You\u2019ve got to know when to hold \u2018em \/ Know when to fold \u2018em \/ Know when to walk away \/ And know when to run.<\/em>\u201d Yep, the words to that song may be the reason why I\u2019ve &#8220;enjoyed&#8221; <em>several <\/em>great careers during my journey.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The 70s Were the Foundation for <em>My <\/em>Journey<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I truly believe the greatest direction I received during the 70s was my 4-year stint in the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since I didn\u2019t have a clue as to what I wanted to do with my life, I not only \u201cmatured\u201d with many challenges both in Guam and aboard <em>Kitty Hawk<\/em>, but it built the confidence for me as a US Navy veteran to begin my new journey\u2014my new career. I learned how to meet challenges head on, make a decision (hopefully, mostly the \u201cright decision\u201d), and how to survive in an ever-changing world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yeah, the 70s were 50ish years ago, but oh\u2026 what a <em>great<\/em> decade.
