It\u2019s what you see.\u201d<\/em>?<br>Q \u2013 Who wrote the following lyrics? <br><em>How many roads must a man walk down<br>Before you call him a man?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Note to self\/readers<\/em><\/strong>: No\n\u201ccaution\u201d is needed for <em>this<\/em>\nparticular post. However, in the \u201clinked\u201d pages that may or may not appear later\nin this post, the reader [Pay attention: this is the legal \u201cdisclaimer\u201d] should\nbe aware <em>that there are three languages\nincluded: English, military, and Navy (or Army\/USMC). The reader may find two\nof the three offensive<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/FM_21-30.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/FM_21-30.jpg?resize=148%2C231&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-397\" width=\"148\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/FM_21-30.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/FM_21-30.jpg?resize=191%2C300&amp;ssl=1 191w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 148px) 100vw, 148px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I say that tongue-in-cheek, but in the military, our men and\nwomen have a certain language (or \u201clingo\u201d) and a way of speaking their mind. <em>Oh, you didn\u2019t know that?<\/em> However, once one\nleaves the service, much of that colorful language often continues to be a part\nof our daily lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With that tidbit of knowledge in mind, let me introduce you\nto a little bit of military \u201clingo.\u201d Note that the Navy, Army, USMC, and USAF\nuse many of the same terms and phrases, but since <em>yours truly<\/em> is a <em>Navy veteran<\/em>,\nI tend to use \u201cNavy speak\u201d more than the others.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some of my favorites. My wife and kids are also\nfamiliar with these terms and, in some instances, I continue to hear these\nchoice words. I\u2019ve been asked not to teach this language to my grandkids (yet).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AWOL<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cAbsent\nWithout Leave.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Beat Feet<\/strong> \u2013 a phrase\nused to describe someone getting away quickly. <em>\u201cLet\u2019s beat feet outta here before the Chief of the Boat comes back.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Boats<\/strong> &#8211; A\nshortened nickname used to describe a sailor in the Boatswain&#8217;s Mate rating.\nAlso, a term often used by veterans to call their children (or maybe that\u2019s\njust me).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Boonies<\/strong> \u2013 a slang\nterm used to describe remote, wild areas, jungles, or swampy areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Boot<\/strong> \u2013 a slang\nterm for a new recruit. Also known as a \u201cCherry\u201d or \u201cNew Meat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Brain Fart<\/strong> \u2013 a phrase\nused to describe a condition when, under stress, one cannot recall or perform\nsomething that would normally be easy or second nature<em>. \u201cDid you just have a brain fart when you walked in?\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bummer<\/strong> \u2013 a term\nto describe bad luck. <em>\u201cThe Gators lost\nagain; bummer.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CF<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cCharlie\nFoxtrot.\u201d I\u2019ll just leave this for you to Google. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chow<\/strong> \u2013 another\nterm for a meal. <em>\u201cWhat time is chow?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cop out<\/strong> \u2013 a phrase\nused to describe when someone quits or backs out of an assignment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Days and a Wake Up<\/strong>\n\u2013 a phrase used by short timers to describe how much time left before\ndischarge. \u201c<em>I\u2019ve got 10 days and a wake\nup<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Deck<\/strong> \u2013 another\nterm for the floor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Decked out<\/strong> \u2013 a phrase\nused to describe someone who is all dressed up. <em>\u201cHe\u2019s really decked out for tonight\u2019s party.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Downer<\/strong> \u2013 a term\nused to describe a situation that is disappointing. <em>\u201cThe Gators lost again.\u201d<\/em> That\u2019s a downer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Drag<\/strong> \u2013 a term\nused to describe a situation that is disappointing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Five-finger discount<\/strong>\n\u2013 a phrase used to describe the cost for something that is acquired by theft. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gedunk<\/strong> \u2013 refers\nto snack food, such as candy or chips, as well as the place they are sold: The\nGedunk Shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Grunt<\/strong> \u2013 a U.S.\ninfantryman, also known as a \u201cGround pounder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gung ho<\/strong> \u2013 a phrase\nused to describe someone who is enthusiastic and ready to go. <em>\u201cHe was all gung ho when he joined the Navy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Head<\/strong> \u2013 another\nterm for a bathroom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hurry Up and Wait<\/strong>\n\u2013 a phrase used across all military branches to sarcastically describe the\nmilitary\u2019s propensity to perform tasks quickly, then sit idly by for long\nperiods of time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>KP<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cKitchen\nPolice.\u201d A term used to describe duties in the galley, usually NOT cooking, but\ncleaning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lay it on me<\/strong> \u2013 a phrase\nmeaning to speak your piece, tell me what\u2019s on your mind. <em>\u201cI need someone to talk to.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m here; lay it on me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Living the dream<\/strong>\n\u2013 a sarcastic phrase used when someone is asked how they are, they reply with\nthis which sounds upbeat and a positive term, and they are actually miserable.\n&#8220;How are you doing today Mr. Jones?&#8221; &#8220;Living the dream, Sir!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Make a Hole<\/strong> \u2013 a\nphrase used by all military branches to \u201csuggest\u201d to a group of people to get\nout of the way. In boot camp, we\u2019d always say (out loud, but not shouting) \u201c<em>Make a hole, coming through<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Marine Candy Bar<\/strong>\n\u2013 a derogatory phrase used by the Navy (I can\u2019t see Marines using this term,\nunless it\u2019s to describe a \u201cNavy Candy Bar\u201d) to describe a urinal cake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mid-rats<\/strong> &#8211; short\nfor \u201cMIDnight RATions.\u201d On a ship, usually leftover lunch and dinner or a PB\nand J. Served after hours, around midnight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NAVY<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cNever\nAgain Volunteer Yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Non-skid<\/strong> &#8211; A\nrough epoxy coating used for grip on a ship\u2019s weather decks (including the\nflight deck of an aircraft carrier). Also, it\u2019s another term for toilet paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nut to butt<\/strong> &#8211; a phrase\nused to describe standing in line\u2014usually at attention\u2014close quarters, body to\nbody, each man&#8217;s chest pressed to the back of the man ahead, or &#8220;nut to\nbutt.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>O dark thirty<\/strong> \u2013 a\nphrase used to describe a time before pre-dawn, very early in the morning.\nAlso, \u201cZero-dark thirty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Occifer<\/strong> \u2013 a\nderogatory term used to describe an officer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Polish a turd<\/strong> &#8211; a\nphrase used to describe how to make the most of a bad situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Port<\/strong> &#8211; the ;eft\nside of the boat or ship (when facing the bow). It is also the left side of an\naircraft when facing the nose from inside. Also a term for place of arrival for\nships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pucker factor<\/strong> &#8211; A\nphrase used to describe the tension caused by high stress during a difficult or\ndangerous evolution. So named because your sphincter tends to tighten up, or\n&#8220;pucker&#8221; involuntarily, during such times. If you\u2019ve ever been to the\nChicago Sears Tower (now called the Willis Tower) and walked onto the Skydeck\u2026 on\nthe 103rd floor\u2026 and looked down\u2026 <em>the \u201cpucker\nfactor\u201d is about a 9.0.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scuttlebutt<\/strong> \u2013 a\nterm used to describe rumors; also a term for a water fountain. <em>\u201cWhat\u2019s the latest scuttlebutt.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Skivvies<\/strong> \u2013\nanother term for underwear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sliders<\/strong> \u2013 a term\nused to describe hamburgers or cheeseburgers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SOP<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cStandard\nOperating Procedure.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sponge<\/strong> \u2013 a term\nused to describe a person who never contributes, but expects others to share. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Starboard<\/strong> &#8211; the\nright side of the boat or ship (when facing the bow). It is also the right side\nof an aircraft when facing the nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>US ARMY<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cUncle\nSam Ain\u2019t Released Me Yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>USMC<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cUncle\nSam\u2019s Misguided Children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WTF<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cWhiskey\nTango Foxtrot.\u201d Like \u201cCF\u201d (above), I\u2019m just going to leave this one right here.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you know some of the more common <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Navy Lingo and Army\/Marine Lingo (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/azadkinsiii.com\/resources.html\" target=\"_blank\">Navy Lingo and Army\/Marine Lingo<\/a> terms and phrases. You are welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s a crowdsource question that you can help me out. In my upcoming book, NEVER FORGET, I use a few military words. And, those particular words, I with spell out or describe in the text. However, there are tons more military lingo. should I include a partial glossary (the terms I use in the book) or a complete glossary, similar to what\u2019s on the website?
