Here\u2019s a few more shared \u201cmemories:\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>\u201cAhhh, you no butterfly.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li><em>\u201cThere\u2019s drunk\u2026 and there\u2019s NAVY drunk. Trust me, there\u2019s a big difference!\u201d<\/em><\/li><li><em>\u201cI remember in \u201868 there were 4 CVAs with their support ships in port due to a typhoon. Prices went sky high in Olongapo!\u201d<\/em><\/li><li><em>\u201cMagsaysay Street\u2026 I can neither confirm nor deny said street. But whatever may have happened there, stayed there.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li><em>\u201cI for one HATED that port. Medical got slammed there. Over 20% came down with STDs.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li><em>\u201cTo this day, when I tell people what PI was like, most think I&#8217;m crazy. Ah, those were the days.\u201d<\/em><\/li><li><em>\u201cI remember pulling in after an extended stay in the Gulf. Not really a <em>major<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/100-milestones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>milestone<\/strong><\/a>, but I\u2019m at \u201cthat age\u201d where I&#8217;m a <em>little <\/em>more opinionated  than in years past. I don\u2019t have as much patience as before, and one thing that sticks in my mind from the Navy days: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/24-hurry-up-and-wait\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Hurry Up &amp; Wait<\/em><\/strong>.<\/a>\u201d Oh yeah, I wrote a blog post about that earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I say that somewhat jokingly, but it\u2019s true. I\u2019ve also noticed that as I\u2019ve gotten older\u2014and\u2026 retired\u2014I seem to be busier now than ever. My days are filled with a plethora of things to do, plus\u2014perhaps most important\u2014I\u2019m trying to take better care of myself. With my wife\u2019s encouragement and setting our priorities, we\u2019re making that happen, by exercising more and eating healthier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With age&#8230; comes widsom!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Growing Up in a College Town<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I live in a college town (Gainesville: University of Florida). Fact is, I was born and raised here and aside from my four years in the Navy and a stint of working for several companies around the country in the 80s, we ended up back here. Even though our kids were born elsewhere, they, like me, were also raised here in Gainesville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/UF_FootballSwamp.jpg?resize=259%2C194&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5566\"\/><figcaption>University of Florida, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium<br>&#8220;The Swamp&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The college town experience is nothing new. But as I get older, I tend to remember some of the things my parents said when I was growing up. No, I\u2019m <em>not<\/em> becoming my parents, though some of their personalities (i.e., idiosyncrasies) are apparent in me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when you\u2019ve lived in the same town for many years and you\u2019ve seen it grow, both in square miles and in population (not to mention <em>student<\/em> populations), you tend to notice when the students are back in town: longer lines at the grocery stores, more traffic, and you find that a lot of the younger drivers are new to the city and don\u2019t seem to know where they\u2019re going. That, or they&#8217;re distracted by &#8220;gadgets.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I try to be patient at the <em>beginning <\/em>of the Fall semester\u2026 I <em>really<\/em> do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>After the Navy<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I first moved back to Gainesville in 1977 after the Navy, I joined the <strong>Gainesville Fire Department<\/strong>. It was a natural for me since I was an ABH (<strong>Aviation Boatswain\u2019s Mate-Handler<\/strong>) <strong>Crash<\/strong> firefighter. All for under $5,000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I did what the Fire Chief at <strong>NAS Agana, Guam<\/strong> once told me to do when talking about our fleet of Crash trucks. \u201c<em>Take care of her and she\u2019ll take care of you<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was right. I was a shade-tree mechanic in my Uncle Walter\u2019s gas station during high school, and I knew a thing or two about engines. This, of course, was <em>before <\/em>it became <em>impossible<\/em> to work on your cars with fuel-injection, computer-based crap, and dozens of fancy gizmos that seem to go awry or break the day <em>after <\/em>your car\u2019s warranty is up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please\u2026 NO phone calls about extending my car warranty. I get 3-4 of those a week already. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The point I\u2019m trying to make here is that when I came home and <em>before<\/em> I met Becky, I drove my truck around town, squealing tires, and making more noise than I should have, all the while trying to impress others. Did I mention the Thrush glass packs I had installed while in Bremerton, Washington?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all, I was a proud US Navy veteran with a cool truck. I mean, why not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>See You at the Red Light<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But now, today&#8217;s college kids seem to drive a little more reckless than back in my day. But I often ask myself, &#8220;<em>is that really true or is it that I simply forgot how reckless I drove at that age?<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just last week, I was cruising down a main road near the university going the posted speed limit (I still drive a pickup, but not \u201cfixed up\u201d like the Chet Mobile), and this young kid came up on my tail, honked his horn, then passed me (it was three lanes), making a hand gesture\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let me pause here and tell you that I no longer \u201creturn the gesture\u201d or say anything extemporaneous out loud. At this point in my life, it\u2019s simply not worth it. I just repeat what my dad used to say, \u201c<strong><em>See you at the red light<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d And nine times out of ten, I pull up alongside him or her, and simply smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But \u201con the inside,\u201d I say to myself: \u201c<em>Got you way up there didn\u2019t it, you yahoo!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was that one time, however\u2014not too long ago\u2014during fall football season and cool enough to ride around with my truck windows down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar situation: a young little turd with loud mufflers zoomed passed me, his radio blaring. I just kept cruising down the road and when I pulled up next to him, I turned and commented, \u201cNice car, but your engine\u2019s skipping. The timing is retarded by about 5 degrees. Might want to have it checked out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kid didn\u2019t know how to respond, but I musta given him something to think about because he said with a puzzled look, \u201cThanks, I think,\u201d then <em>slowly <\/em>pulled out when the light turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Shade tree mechanics rock!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That won\u2019t be the last time I use that line, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where Has the Time Gone?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I mentioned earlier than I\u2019ll be 67 next month. My mind still feel like I\u2019m in my 20s, but my body reminds me DAILY that I can\u2019t do many of those things I did back then. That\u2019s okay\u2026 no complaining. I\u2019m happy to be able to stay active and healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of my favorite movie quotes comes from <strong><em>Deep Blue Sea <\/em><\/strong>(1999), where &#8220;Preacher&#8221; (the cook, LL Cool J) explains to the physicist with two PhDs, &#8220;Tom Scoggins&#8221; (Michael Rapaport) his own theory of relativity: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cEinstein\u2019s theory of relativity. Grab hold of a hot pan, a second can seem like an hour. Put your hands on a hot woman, an hour can seem like a second. It\u2019s all relative.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as I\u2019ve mentioned before in earlier blogs, my wife &amp; I often joke about the new \u201cdefinition\u201d of life as you get older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWhen you first break out a new roll of toilet paper, it unravels slowly. But as you near the end of the roll, it seems to unravel much faster. Sort of like how time seems to fly when you get older.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>One More\u2026 Thanksgiving<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t know about you, but Thanksgiving last year was a blur. My dad suggested a little addition.<br>(Click to enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I remember sitting down to write my blog for Thanksgiving a year ago: \u201c<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/58-nuggets-of-normalcy-thanksgiving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nuggets of Normalcy\u201d \u2013 Thanksgiving Style<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. Somehow, the \u201cZoom Thanksgiving\u201d thing, while appropriate at the time, just didn\u2019t do it for us. Don\u2019t get me wrong, I appreciate the technology and the ability to visit with family &amp; friends; it just wasn&#8217;t the same; far from it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this year is different. We\u2019ve both gotten our vaccinations <em>and<\/em> our boosters. And yes, while we are venturing out more and more to church, eating out, and visiting friends, we\u2019re still trying to be cognizant of where we are and what we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For us, Thanksgiving this year will be spent with family\u2014a first in quite a while. We\u2019ll still enjoy the \u201c4-Fs:\u201d Family, Friends, Food, &amp; Fellowship\u2026 5 if you watch Football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as a favor to me\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026 as you and your family &amp; friends sit down to feast this Thanksgiving holiday, take a moment to not only be thankful for <em>your<\/em> blessings, but also thank a veteran <em>and <\/em>our active duty service men and women.
