Eject! \u2013 Excitement from the Flight Deck<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<strong><em>\u201d<\/em><\/strong> Several comments were spot on and reminded me of things I\u2019d forgotten. Here are a few more shared \u201cmemories:\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>We had a Student Naval Flight Officer at VT-86 in Pensacola eject from a TF-9 Cougar sitting on the ramp in &#8217;73. The Cougars had been retrofitted with Martin-Baker zero\/zero seats and he was unhurt. The next day Martin-Baker called the squadron and said, &#8220;It worked?!? Great!&#8221;<\/em><\/li><li><em>I was on that cruise [Westpac &#8217;75] with VA-52. I was on the bow troubleshooting and cat checking our A-6s. When we saw what happened we hauled ass back away from the bow; it got hairy.<\/em><\/li><li><em>Saw the same thing happen at Cubi in 1969. I was at the Midway hangar over by the flight line on that side of the runway. A Marine F-4 started its takeoff roll. Just about halfway down the runway, it jumped into the air way before it should have. It rolled to the right and the crew ejected. They landed near the tower. The plane rolled inverted and crashed into the hillside below the &#8220;O&#8221; Club. The elevator control pack failed and when that happens, the elevators go full nose up and lock there. Fortunately, the crew got out and the only loss was the plane and a bunch of jungle trees and brush.<\/em><\/li><li><em>You described it very well &#8212; everything on the flight deck seems to happen at 100 mph, 24-7.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><strong>Warning: the following post contains three languages:<br>English, Military, and Navy.<br>Some readers may find two of the languages \u201coffensive.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I left the Navy in July 1977 after my four-year enlistment was up. Actually, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/azadkinsiii.com\/book_navy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Three Years, Eleven Months, &amp; 29 Days\u2026 But Who\u2019s Counting<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funny thing, though\u2026 and I\u2019ve heard this from many veterans, not just Navy veterans: <em>\u201cI left the Navy, but the Navy never left me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those four years straightened me out. Not that I was crooked or on a wrong path, mind you. No, I think it was because I graduated high school in 1972 when I was 17 years old and \u201ctried\u201d college\u2014<strong>Florida State University<\/strong>. After a year, they sent me \u201cthe letter,\u201d asking me to leave: \u201c<em>Dismissed for academic reasons<\/em>.\u201d All because I had a 0.7 GPA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had no earthly clue what to do with my life. Let\u2019s just say I grew up in the Navy, got my act together, and from thence forward, I did okay. Today, I\u2019m 67 and now retired, yet I seem to be almost as busy as I was during my working years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But many of those Navy terms and phrases never left me&#8230; and, some are still quite appropriate to use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cAnother Day in Paradise\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since I am retired, I could almost say that every day is <em>Another Day in Paradise<\/em>. Most of the time it is, at least, where I am. My wife &amp; I are safe &amp; healthy, got a roof over our heads, plenty of food in the fridge, and plenty of booze in the liquor cabinet. We get plenty of exercise and we try to eat well. Our kids are grown &amp; married and we\u2019ve been blessed with two grandchildren. What more could one ask for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back in my Navy days, I believe the term was, <em>Another Fine Day in the Navy<\/em>, spoken either by a lifer or by some sarcastic fool who thought he\u2019d join the Navy to see the world. Eisenhower<\/em><\/strong> (CVN-69) in the Atlantic Ocean. <br>Photo credit: Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Cameron Pinske.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I first signed up in July 1973 (\u201cPress hard the third copy is yours\u201d), the Tallahassee Navy recruiter informed me I would first report to the Jacksonville Armed Forces Induction Center before heading off to <strong>Orlando Recruit Training Center<\/strong>, aka &#8220;Boot Camp.&#8221; He also mentioned it would be a long day. That\u2019s when I first heard the term, <em>Hurry up and Wait<\/em>. I wrote about that earlier, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/from-civilian-to-us-navy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;From Civilian to US Navy&#8221;<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cYou Buy, I\u2019ll Fly\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A youngster at the tender age of 18, I&#8217;d never heard this phrase until I reported to my first duty station, <strong>NAS Agana, Guam<\/strong>. I wrote about that earlier, \u201c<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/53-you-always-remember-your-first\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">You Always Remember Your First<\/a><\/em><\/strong>,\u201d where I worked in <strong>Crash &amp; Rescue<\/strong>; we manned two shifts, Port &amp; Starboard (I was Port), 24 hours on &amp; 24 off for 15 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On our days off, we\u2019d sometimes party in the barracks and other times we\u2019d have a \u201csection party\u201d at one of the local beaches. There were few cars to be had on the base and those lucky enough to drive one usually bought it from a sailor who was to be transferred to another duty station. Many (MANY) hand-me-downs. Port Section Party @ Gab Gab Beach. <br>Glenn Law: &#8220;Don&#8217;t even think about it, Chet.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The phrase was originally, <em>you buy, I\u2019ll fly<\/em>. But in Guam, it was just the opposite: <em>I\u2019ll fly if you buy<\/em>. And since we were young sailors of drinking age\u2014even though the beer sold on base was \u201c3:2 beer\u201d\u2014we\u2019d pony up and give the driver some money to fly for beer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1976, when <strong><em>Kitty Hawk<\/em><\/strong> was in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/30-uss-kitty-hawk-bremerton-shipyards-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bremerton Shipyards<\/a><\/strong>, Crash maintained a crew of three at the <strong>Kitsap County Airport<\/strong> at all times, since that\u2019s where the <em>Kitty Hawk<\/em> kept her C-1 COD (Carrier onboard Delivery) aircraft. When the pilots flew training missions down to California, \u201cI heard rumors\u201d they may bring back a case or two (or 20!) of Coors beer, something we couldn\u2019t get in Bremerton. They\u2019d usually drop a case off with the Crash crew. You know\u2026 for old times\u2019 sake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, they were <em>only <\/em>rumors. Gives new meaning to the term, <em>I\u2019ll fly if you buy<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cMake a Hole\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides two or three below-mentioned acronyms, I probably use the phrase <em>Make a Hole<\/em> more often than any other I picked up in the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m 6\u20194\u201d and, while I weigh a \u201clittle\u201d more than my 185 pounds when discharged, I\u2019m a big guy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Football games\u2014you know, where there\u2019s a million fans &amp; students vying for 80,000 seats in the Gator football stadium, all wearing some fashion of orange and blue\u2014that\u2019s the worst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"436\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/UFStadium.jpg?resize=800%2C436&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"University of Florida Ben Hill Griffin Statium\" class=\"wp-image-5826\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/UFStadium.jpg?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/UFStadium.jpg?resize=300%2C164&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/UFStadium.jpg?resize=768%2C419&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>University of Florida Ben Hill Griffin Stadium<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we go\u2014which is rare these days since I\u2019ve got a big screen TV, cheap beer, and microwave Orville Redenbacher\u2019s\u2014I tell my wife to get behind me and I start to make my way to the gate entrance: \u201c<em>Make a Hole\u201d <\/em>seems to do the trick. And now and then I\u2019ll add in, \u201c<em>Service Week<\/em>,\u201d just to confuse people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Moses parting the Red Sea, it usually works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The \u201cAcronyms\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy, along with the Army, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard, all have similar terms and, from my experience, know when it\u2019s appropriate to use them. And when you\u2019re a veteran, you know you\u2019ve earned the right to use them <em>and <\/em>use them frequently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My wife, and to a lesser extent, my kids, picked up on a few. My grandkids? Not yet&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>FNG<\/strong> \u2013 We all know what this means. So keeping this \u201cfamily friendly,\u201d only the \u201caudio\u201d portion will reveal the true phrase. After I left the Navy and began my career as an Electronics Engineer, I continued to say (usually, \u201con the inside\u201d) FNG. That is, until I went to work for <strong>Weyerhaeuser Company<\/strong>\u2019s pulp &amp; paper mill in Nowhere, Oklahoma. We lived in Idabel (where our daughter was born) and I drove 20 miles to Valliant, a town of less than 1000\u2014the location of the pulp &amp; paper mill. There, when I first walked in and introduced myself, one of the pulp mill workers glanced down at my spit-shined flight deck boots (I wish I still had them) and said loud enough in a southeastern Oklahoma southern drawl for everyone on the factory floor to hear: \u201cWe got us a friggin\u2019 new guy.\u201d Turns out, he was a former airdale, too. &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>FUBAR<\/strong> \u2013 I\u2019m not sure who came up with this phrase first, Army or Navy, but I remember the line used in the movie, \u201c<strong>Saving Private Ryan<\/strong>.\u201d You know the scene(s)\u2014actually, there were two of them. I used this term many times during my stint with the City of Gainesville Fire Department. There were times\u2014accidents &amp; fires\u2014where words couldn\u2019t convey the mess.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>SNAFU<\/strong> \u2013 Holy moly, does this speak volumes to me these days. After two years of dealing with the pandemic, what is <em>normal<\/em>? How on earth do you <em>Polish a Turd<\/em>? I could go on &amp; on, but I think most of us are ready to get back to some sense of normalcy, whatever that is. Hopefully, it won\u2019t be a <em>SNAFU<\/em>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>CF<\/strong> \u2013 I\u2019m just gonna leave this one right here. Ya\u2019ll know what it means, and it\u2019s not just the mall parking lot at Christmas time.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>GAF<\/strong> \u2013 There are so many times when I\u2019m tempted to utter something obnoxious out loud. Then I remember those days in the Navy, especially when I was close to either a transfer (you know, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/azadkinsiii.com\/blog\/52-30-days-and-a-wake-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30 Days and a Wake up<\/a><\/em><\/strong>) or being discharged. I simply got the point where I didn\u2019t <em>Give a flying flip<\/em>. While I tried not to let those feelings drive <em>my <\/em>attitude, I think \u201cGAF\u201d <em>is <\/em>an attitude.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Livin\u2019 the Dream, Baby!<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let me close this blog post by saying that there are literally hundreds of terms and phrases used by the military branches and many (MANY) cross over to the other branches. When you\u2019ve served in the military\u2014no matter how many years you put in\u2014much of that stays with you for the rest of your life. Routines, language, and attitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the quote above from the movie <strong><em>Heartbreak Ridge<\/em><\/strong>\u2026 adapt, improvise, and overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in case you want more, I\u2019ve got a whole <strong>Glossary of Navy terms <\/strong>on my website.
