    It\u2019s summertime. I don\u2019t know about you, but down here in Florida, we had a long, dry spell during Spring, and now it\u2019s raining. Regardless, we jump for joy when the temperature falls below 100 degrees, and the humidity falls below 1,000%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Okay, I may be exaggerating just<\/em> a bit, but what can I say? I\u2019m a sailor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It\u2019s also reunion time. This year, I\u2019ve got two reunions in August, and I\u2019m looking forward to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    80th Division Veterans Association (Chester, VA)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    My dad, A. Z. Adkins Jr.<\/strong>, served with the 80th Infantry Division<\/strong> during World War II in Europe. I\u2019ve written about some of his experiences in several blog posts. And \u2026 I wrote a book based on his diary. You Can\u2019t Get Much Closer Than This: Combat with the 80th \u201cBlue Ridge\u201d Division in World War II Europe<\/strong> was first published in October 2005 by Casemate Publishers. The Military Book Club immediately selected it as the Book of the Month (November 2005). It\u2019s currently in its second printing.<\/p>\n\n\n

    His unit (Company H, 317th Infantry Regiment) came ashore on Utah Beach 82 years ago this week. The 80th Division\u2019s \u201cBaptism of Fire<\/a>\u201d took place a couple of weeks later in Argentan, France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The 80th Infantry Division Veterans Association is the second oldest active veterans\u2019 association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There aren\u2019t many World War II veterans still with us. Yet, we continue to gather in their honor: families, friends, and fellow veterans. There won\u2019t be many of us at this <\/em>reunion, but for those of us who will be there, we\u2019ll enjoy catching up, just like we do every couple of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And we will remember those no longer with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I\u2019ll make a couple of presentations\u2014my focus is on World War II (and World War I) research. For the families that attend, my goal is to share with them the resources, knowledge, and any assistance I can to help them on their \u201cjourney.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I remember the first time I saw my own father\u2019s typed name on a Morning Report. It brought tears to my eyes in the early 2000s. And yet, I\u2019m still at it: adding content to my website, www.80thdivision.com<\/a>, and researching 80th Division soldiers for families. I quit counting after 200,000 documents, images, collections, and reports on the website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What makes me happy is that now I\u2019m receiving requests from the soldier\u2019s grandchildren<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We do what we can to continue keeping these memories alive, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    USS Kitty Hawk<\/em> (Pensacola, FL)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Later this month, the USS Kitty Hawk<\/em> Veterans Association<\/strong> will meet in the Florida Panhandle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This will be my generation\u2014those of us who served in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and into the 2000s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Kitty Hawk<\/em> was decommissioned on January 31, 2009<\/a>. I was fortunate enough to attend the decommission ceremony. Because of a trial (I was an expert witness), I tried but couldn\u2019t make her last trip from San Diego to Bremerton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    However, as I wrote in an earlier blog post, the decommissioning ceremony was the first time I\u2019d laid eyes on the Hawk <\/em>since I walked across the Afterbrow on July 10, 1977. And she was just as big and beautiful as I’d first laid eyes on her in March 1975. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But … we’d both aged a bit since then. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The reunion allows us to catch up with friends\u2014both old and new, including a few whom I had the honor to serve alongside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We often share some of the same stories (again), but like all good sailors, each time we tell them, we embellish them a bit more. We also get to tell some of the same old \u201cno shit\u201d jokes, which always makes me laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The difference here is that the Navy has a different \u201clanguage\u201d than the Army. Most of us shared the same types of experiences, whether it was shore duty, duty aboard a ship, or liberty. The language is unique enough that I created a \u201cGlossary of Navy Terms<\/a>\u201d and have it on my website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I also realize that each year, each meeting, each reunion, we\u2019re all getting a little older. But I tell myself, we\u2019re still upright and moving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One of my veteran friends is fond of saying, \u201cI\u2019m in a footrace with the Lord.\u201d <\/em>I understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And, like the 80th Division reunion, we will remember and honor those no longer with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    GHS Class of \u201872 – 2027<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    I graduated from Gainesville (Florida) High School<\/strong> in 1972. We\u2019ll have our 55th high school reunion next year. I\u2019m part of the planning committee, but I often comment, \u201cI\u2019m just the web guy.\u201d That sometimes<\/em> keeps me out of trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n

    Like the 80th Division website, I also built and continue to maintain the GHS Class of \u201972 website, www.ghsclassof72.com<\/a>. It\u2019s relatively easy and not as much information to keep up with as the 80th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What I find hardest, though, is when one of our classmates passes away. I try to update the \u201cMemorial Page\u201d on the site as soon as I\u2019ve learned of their passing. Most of these classmates I knew and was proud to call them friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    GHS had over 1,000 classmates graduate in 1972; there are still a bunch of us around (many in Gainesville). The website and Facebook group are ways to share our memories and to let others know what\u2019s happening with the reunions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Years (MANY years) ago, I scanned our high school photos into the computer, and at reunion time, I\u2019ll print out the name badges with the high school photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One of the things I ask my wife when comparing someone’s high school photo with a photo on their Facebook page is , \u201cDo I look as old to you as they do to me?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Becky looks at me and does the right thing \u2026 nothing. Just smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And once again, like the 80th Division and the Kitty Hawk<\/em> reunions, we will remember those no longer with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So, yeah \u2026 I\u2019ll go to these reunions and will continue to go until I no longer can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
