Navy Friday Funny – The Chief & the Parrot

Each military branch of the United States has its own cultures, language, and traditions. In the Navy, the Chief Petty Officer serves a dual role as both a technical expert and as a leader; emphasis being more on leadership. There is always a sense of humor that comes from this culture. For the Navy, I find the more ingenious humor typically involves a CPO.

Enjoy this Navy Friday Funny!

The old Navy Chief finally retired and bought that chicken ranch he always wanted. He took with him his life-long pet parrot.

The first morning at 0430, the parrot squawked loudly and said, “Reveille, Reveille. Up all hands, Heave out, trice up! The smoking lamp is lit, now Reveille!”

The old Chief scolded the parrot. “We are no longer in the Navy. Go back to sleep.”

The next morning at 0430, the parrot repeated the same routine. The Chief angrily told the parrot, “If you keep this up, I’ll put your ass out in the chicken pen.”

Again the next morning, the parrot repeated the routine. True to his word, the Chief put the parrot out in the chicken pen.

About 0630 the next morning, the Chief was awakened by a ruckus in the chicken pen. He jumped up and ran out to see what was the matter.

The parrot had about 40 white chickens, all standing at attention and in formation. On the ground lay three bruised and beaten brown chickens.

The Chief heard the parrot, loud and clear. “By God, when I say fall out in dress whites, I don’t mean khakis!”

Apologies to those not Navy veterans; you may not get this.

  1. Andy,

Our first Sunday after we got issued our Whites and Khakis at AOCS Pensacola we started to line up outside our rooms to muster to march to church. I had on my whites with my black shoes as I had worn during my nine years enlisted. The other officer candidates ( in the navy less than three weeks ) had on their whites with their white shoes. When they saw me they started back in their rooms to change. I yelled no you are all correct. The old salt was wrong. Had we mustered below with out our Marine DI there would have been hell to pay. Whites mean Whites as the parrot said, lol.
